Systems’ Erika Palmer named to INCOSE leadership post

Cornell Systems Engineering senior lecturer Erika Palmer has been appointed to the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Technical Operations (TechOps) Leadership as deputy technical director.

“I am looking forward to bringing sociotechnical systems expertise to help achieve INCOSE’s Systems Engineering Vision 2035,” Palmer said. “It will be great working with the incoming technical director, Olivier Dessoude.”

“I am looking forward to working with Erika in the years to come,” said Dessoude. “I am sure that her leadership and skills will greatly benefit TechOps and the INCOSE community.”

Palmer is a transdisciplinary social/sociotechnical systems engineer who brings diverse disciplines into the systems engineering community through her research and teaching. She received her Ph.D. in systems engineering and social policy from the University of Bergen (Norway), where she brought systems engineering tools to the world of social systems in a radical collaborative environment with social scientists and humanities scholars—resulting in high policy impact with research outcomes integrating with policy-making platforms. She is the founder and chair of the Social Systems Working Group (SocWG) at the International Council for Systems Engineering (INCOSE). Palmer is also the Americas lead for Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering (EWLSE) at INCOSE and represents Cornell on INCOSE’s Academic Council.

The INCOSE deputy technical director is an appointed director position with a two-year term of office which runs concurrently with that of the technical director. The deputy technical director reports to the incumbent technical director and is normally expected to succeed the technical director on completion of their term of office. The deputy technical director assists the technical director in the performance of their duties which are focused on the leadership, management and governance of INCOSE's diverse technical activities across the range of systems engineering practices in different domains around the world.
