Biography

Dr. Wenqi Yi joined Cornell Systems Engineering faculty in 2017. She obtained her Ph.D. from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell in 2016, with a concentration in Civil Infrastructure Systems. Her success in a highly multi-disciplinary project during her Ph.D. sets her mind on pursuing research and applications that embrace complexity and integrate natural, human, and engineered systems. Yi received her M.Eng. degree in Water Resources Systems from Cornell University in 2009 and B.Eng. degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China in 2006.

Research Interests

Dr. Yi is interested in solving practical and theoretical problems that arise in transportation systems, manufacturing systems, energy systems, and water resource systems to address the increasingly complex societal-technical challenges and to leverage the power of the latest research and development progress in computational engineering and information science. The methodological thrusts include:

  1. Applications of:
    • Stochastic programming in decision-making under uncertainty
    • Variational analysis to the design, improvement, and risk management of complex systems
  2. Developing theories and methods for:
    • Scalable and computable model-based systems engineering
    • Analysis of emergent properties of engineered systems and enterprise systems
  3. Developing and implementing tools for:
    • Computable knowledge and data visualization
    • Data-driven, human-centered design

Teaching Interests

Dr. Yi taught the core Systems Engineering graduate course, Systems Analysis, Behavior, and Optimization, in Spring 2017 and is actively developing a graduate course on Systems Modeling Language (SysML). She recently joined the faculty advisors of the Cornell student project team, Cornell University Sustainable Design (CUSD), leading the student teams and working with local community partners to look for opportunities and solutions for improving the local public transit system using quantitative analytics, mathematical modeling, and human-centered design.
