Overview of Electricity Market Operation

Electricity markets are functioning around the world. This talk will cover fundamentals of wholesale electricity market operation, focusing on integrated power system and electricity market operation, using PJM market, the largest wholesale electricity market in the world, as an example. Hot topics, such as uncertainty, gas-electric coordination, renewable, storage, Distributed Energy Resources (DER), demand response, and system operation under extreme weather, will also be discussed.
 

Bio:
Hong Chen obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from South East University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China in 1992 and 1995 and her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 2002. She is principal engineer at PJM Interconnection in Pennsylvania. From 2003 to 2007, she was principal analyst at ISO New England, and from 1995 to 1998, she was R&D engineer at Nanjing Automation Research Institute (NARI). Her research interests include electricity market operation, operation risk mitigation, stability analysis and load forecasting. Dr. Chen is currently Vice President of IEEE PES Technical Activities and chair of IEEE PES Technical Council. She was the founding chair of Power System Operation, Planning and Economics Committee (2017), and chair of Power System Operations committee (2015-2016). Dr. Chen is Industry advisor for many DOE and PSERC projects.
